In-Floor Safes Part 2, the Downsides

In-floor safes provide terrific security from theft, but most customers decide against buying one when they learn about all the negatives.
1)  Difficult to install:  Floor safes are hard to install, especially if you need to cut a hole into an existing concrete floor.  Even when pouring a new floor it can be difficult to properly set the safe.
2)  Lack of space:  If all you are storing is gold or cash most floor safes will give you plenty of room.  But for bulkier items like silver or a coin collection or documents, you will run out of space quickly.

3)  Inconvenient to use:  Getting down on hands and knees to unlock a floor safe is awkward.  Reaching down below floor level into the safe is worse.  Even if your knees and back allow you to do that now, will they still be OK in five or ten years?
4)  Water and moisture problems:  Most floor safes are not water-proof around the door, so a broken water heater, sewer backup, water from a fire hose or heavy rain can flood a floor safe and damage its contents.  A rising water table can flood the safe from below ground if there are cracks in the welds.  Floor safes tend to be damper than above ground units, so they are more likely to develop odors and mildew.
5)  Rust:  When safes are installed so that there is contact with damp sand, most can rust through in just a few years.  A plastic or fiberglass safe body can prevent this problem.
6)  Lock problems:  Since the lock is below floor level, it is easy for sand and dirt to get inside it.  That will cause problems for any kind of lock.
7)  You can’t take it with you:  When you sell your house you will almost certainly need to leave a floor safe behind and buy a new one.

All that being said, the high security provided by floor safes make them appropriate for some folks.

Stamp Collector’s Safe

Stamps are easily damaged, in more ways than you might think. Of course they can be torn, burned, soiled, etc., all of which reduce their value. Same for historic signatures, photos, sports memorabilia and other collectables. Naturally, a valuable collection should be secured in a safe, but most stamp collectors use the wrong type of safe.

To protect contents from heat and fire, 98% of safes use moisture which is locked up in the safe’s insulation. When heated by fire the insulation cools by forcing moisture out, to the interior of the safe. Air inside the safe will be saturated and hot (up to 350 degrees). That level of moisture will affect the stamps’ adhesive and may also affect the delicate colors and paper.

To avoid the possibility of being damaged this way in a fire, the best stamp collector’s safe is technically a media safe. Media safes generally keep humidity below 85% during a fire, and maintain a temperature of only 125 to 150 degrees.

EMP and Redundant Safe Locks

Electronic safe locks are definitely faster and easier to use than traditional dial type locks, but some people do not trust their reliability.  Lock failure due to EMP – electromagnetic pulse – is a concern of some people as well.  EMP’s are typically associated with nuclear explosions and specific types of military weapons with the capability of destroying all kinds of electronic systems.  See Wikipedia for information on EMP.

Coin dealer’s safe is burglarized

A coin dealer in Michigan was burglarized recently and lost many thousands of dollars in collectable coins when the robbers opened his safe.  He was depending on the wrong type of safe to protect his inventory.  His low price, low quality, China-built gun safe was opened by hand with some kind of pointed tool.  I won’t mention the brand name of the safe for legal purposes.

Coin dealers should obviously be using high security safes, something suitable for high-value commercial applications. The ONLY gun safes suitable for use by a coin dealer are the RF or HS safes by American Security, a Graffunder Safe or a Fort Knox with steel upgrades. That would also be true if your gun collection is extremely valuable. These safes are more expensive, but the REAL cost of a cheap safe is much higher if it is opened by burglars.
